Football: Results in top 5 European leagues

PARIS (Agencies): After the latest games in the top five European football leagues over the weekend, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Lazio, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are on top of their leagues.

Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 on Sunday in the famous ‘El Clasico’ showdown at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Barcelona missed a chance to open up a five-point gap with this defeat and are now one point behind their archrivals in second place.

Real Madrid reclaimed the top spot in La Liga by raising their points to 56 at the end of 26 weeks.

With this result, Real Madrid moved a point clear of Barcelona in the week 26.

At home, Sevilla also defeated Osasuna 3-2 while Getafe beat Mallorca 1-0 in an away game.

Real Madrid top the league with 56 points, followed by Barcelona with 5 points and Sevilla with 46 points.

Watford snap Liverpool’s 44-match unbeaten run

Liverpool’s 44-game unbeaten run in the English Premier League ended Saturday by Watford at the Vicarage Road.

Liverpool suffered their first Premier League defeat this season and missed a chance to become the second club to end a season without losing a match.

Arsenal still hold the longest unbeaten streak in the Premier League with 49 matches and are the only club to win the league title without losing a match in 2003-2004 season.

Meanwhile, Norwich City beat third placed Leicester City 1-0 at home.

Liverpool remain 22 points ahead in the table with 79 points, followed by Manchester City with 57 points and Leicester City with 50 points.

Bayern hammer Hoffenheim

The leader Bayern Munich stunned Hoffenheim 6-0 in an away game to win 9 out of 10 last matches.

Bayern Munich earned a comfortable win at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena as the away team’s goals were scored by Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Joshua Zirkzee, Philippe Coutinho (2) and Leon Goretzka.

The other title contenders Leipzig drew Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 while Borussia Dortmund beat Freiburg 1-0 at home.

Bayern Munich secured their lead in the Bundesliga by collecting 52 points, while Hoffenheim sit in the eight place with 34 points.

The runners-up Leipzig have 49 points while Borussia Dortmund are in the third place with 48 points.

5 Serie A matches postponed amid coronavirus fears

A total of five Serie A matches have been postponed due to the threat of the coronavirus in northern Italy.

Juventus vs Inter Milan, Udinese vs Fiorentina, AC Milan vs Genoa, Parma vs Spal and Sassuolo vs Brescia games were supposed to be held this weekend without fans at the stadiums but Serie A Saturday decided to reschedule these games for May 13.

The Italian Football Federation already postponed three Serie A games last week as coronavirus continues to spread across the country.

Italy has become the worst-hit country in Europe by the coronavirus outbreak, with the death toll in the country rising to 21 and 820 confirmed cases.

Lazio beat Bologna 2-0 to top the league with 62 points in 26 games, followed by Juventus with 60 points in 25 games and Inter with 54 points in 24 games.

PSG remain comfortably at top of Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) beat Dijon 4-0 to remain comfortably at the top of France’s Ligue 1 with 68 points.

Runners-up Olympique Marseille beat Nimes 3-2 in an away game while Rennes defeated Toulouse 2-0 in an away match.

Leaders PSG are followed by Olympique Marseille with 55 points and Rennes with 47 points.
