HAYWARD: Hayward City Councilwoman Aisha Wahab is running for Congress, aiming to replace current East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell who announced his bid for the 2020 presidency earlier this week.
Wahab was elected to city council in November 2018 and was the first Afghan-American woman to be elected to office in the U.S.
Wahab announced her candidacy to represent California’s 15th district on Twitter Friday morning and said she’s running to give the community the representation it deserves.
District 15 represents much of Alameda and Contra Costa County.

“Too many people are facing rising housing costs and jobs that don’t pay a living wage. I am running for Congress to give our communities the representation we deserve,” the councilwoman said in a tweet.
Wahab considers herself a leader dedicated to ensuring equal access to opportunity for all, according to her campaign website.
The councilwoman graduated from California State University, East Bay with a masters degree in business administration. She also has a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Jose State University.
Swalwell announced his run for president earlier this week on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
