Indiana University cancels Palestinian artist Samia Halaby’s exhibition

DUBAI: Indiana University’s Eskenazi Museum of Art this week cancelled an upcoming exhibition by Palestinian artist Samia Halaby.

The exhibition, titled “Samia Halaby: Centers of Energy,” had been in the works for three years and was scheduled to open on Feb. 10.

Madison Gordon, a board member of the artist’s foundation, told Hyperallergic that Indiana University decided not to open the show as planned because of “safety concerns.”

On Thursday, Gordon took to Instagram to write: “We call on you Pamela Whitten (Indiana University’s president) to reinstate Samia Halaby’s retrospective set to open this February.”

“Uphold IU’s stated values of diversity, free speech, and a world-class education. The campus and community deserve this show, the museum staff who have worked tirelessly for the last three years deserve this show. And Palestinians deserve to be heard and seen,” she added.

Halaby also shared this post on her profile and the artists supporters are signing a petition to bring back the exhibition.
