‘Media role vital for democracy’

KABUL: The United Kingdom Minister for Asia Pacific Mark Field said media played vital role in upholding Afghanistan’s democracy, providing a platform through which human rights can be promoted and upheld, according to a statement on Thursday.

“Today, on World Press Freedom Day, I would like to take this opportunity to commend and pay tribute to Afghanistan’s journalists and media workers. This week, they, along with many Afghans whose precious lives were lost, suffered at the hands of a brutal terrorist attack in Kabul, which the UK strongly condemned,” he said.

Nine media workers lost their lives in that attack; along with two others brave journalists killed in recent attacks in Khost and Kandahar.

“The bravery of Afghan journalists and media workers to continue their vital, professional work has been noted the world over. Despite the risks, they stand firm together, determined never to be cowed by terrorists,” he added.

The UK remained strongly committed to helping build a more peaceful Afghanistan where people enjoy freedom of speech and press.
