CHRISTCHURCH (AFP): New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said that she would announce detailed gun law reforms within 10 days, after a lone gunman killed 50 people in mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch.
Addressing a press conference in Christchurch on Monday, she said cabinet is backing gun law changes in principle.
Ms Ardern was appearing alongside her coalition partner and Deputy PM Winston Peters, who has previously opposed changes.
Meanwhile, Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a self-described white supremacist, has been charged with murder.
Police say the killer used military-style assault weapons modified to make them more deadly for the attack – all of which is legal under current laws.
Tarrant was remanded without a plea and is due back in court on 5th of next month where police said he was likely to face more charges.
The lawyer assigned to handle his case told media today that the suspected gunman is lucid and understands the situation facing him.
