KABUL (Khaama Press): More than 2,000 Afghan refugees returned from Iran, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation (MoRR) said in a statement on Sunday.
At least 534 Afghan refugees came back to the country via Islam Qala in Western Herat Province, the Ministry said. The Ministry also said that at least 288 of the 2,000 returnees were introduced to the International Office for Migration to receive basic necessary aid.
In recent months, the number of Afghan migrants returning home from Iran has surged at a never-before-seen rate for multiple reasons.
Previously, Mawlavi Abdullah Reyaz, head of the refugee department of Nimruz province, had said that more than 65,000 migrants have returned to the country through the Pul-e-Abresham crossing point over the past month.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation had reported that more than 527,000 Afghan refugees had returned to the nation in the previous year, noting that they either left the host country voluntarily or were forcibly left the host country.
However, the UNHCR stated that a strong correlation exists between the ongoing return of Afghan refugees from neighbouring countries and the rising inflation and dearth of economic possibilities in the host countries.
