Police destroy cultivated poppy crop in Gadoon

SWABI: The district police have conducted a successful operation to destroy the cultivated poppy crop over 300 Kanal lands in Gadoon Amazai mountainous belt, said police officials here on Saturday. The entire Gadoon Amazai region was very famous for poppy cultivation and the security agencies had conducted an operation against banned crop in 1987 which culminated in killing of seven people.

Later the first government of Late Benazir Bhutto had established Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate (GAIE), aiming to provide alternative sources of livelihood to the poppy cultivators and in turn they gave up poppy cultivation. Sohail Khalid, district police officer (DPO) said that the information had been collected from the different regions of Gadoon Amazai by the officials of the revenue department and soon after that they had made plan for operation.

None of the growers resisted the police action and we have completed the task peacefully, ” he remarked. The police retuned back from the mountainous region.
