Putin easily wins Russian presidential election

MOSCOW: The incumbent Russian President, Vladimir Putin easily won the re-election on Sunday and was elected as the President for another six years over the world´s largest country.

Putin gets a victory for another six years at a time when his ties with the West are not in a very good condition.

Putin impressive victory will extend his total time in office to nearly 25 years until 2024 and he will be 71 on that time, only Josef Stalin ruled for longer.

During the campaign Vladimir Putin has promised to use his new term to beef up Russia’s defenses against the West and to raise living standards.

During Sunday polls, according to international media Putin had won 73.9 percent of the vote. According to result none of the seven candidates who ran against him posed a threat, and opposition leader Alexei Navalny was barred from running.

Russia’s Central Election Commission recognised that there were some irregularities, but were likely to dismiss wider criticism and declare the overall result legitimate.

Putin loyalists said the result was a vindication of his tough stance towards the West.
