“The safest city of Pakistan”

Sarmad Faraz Abbasi

Living in Islamabad which is famous for its beauty, peace and security was always a dream for me. While I started my LLB in Bahria University Islamabad, my father bought a house and I started living in Islamabad in 2012. Few days backmy wife and I, decided to go for short drive through the city to enjoy the monsoon rain. While we drove through the Margalla hills we were discussing some recent incidents that have taken place in Islamabad which have effected every single resident of Islamabad in one way or the other. These incidents have created a sense of insecurity among the ordinary residents of Islamabad. This city is not the same what it used to be a decade ago. This has given rise to a lot of question marks on the performance of authorities.

The brutal murder of a young Barrister Fahad Malik who was also a British national on August 15, 2016 in one of the posh area of Islamabad during broad day light was allegedly a result of clash of power between gangsters and land grabbers which took a young precious life in the heart of capital. Despite the fact that all three accused persons are behind the bar but still while in jail they have enough power, means and connections that its been five years and still their trial has not been concluded by the Anti-Terrorism Court.

Another devastating incident was ruthless murder of 21 years old Osama Nadeem Sattion January 2ndof this year. Osama became the victim 19 official bullets of government of Pakistan. A “JIT” was formed which after investigating into the matter came to the conclusion that Osama was only a student, neither a terrorist nor a robber and was shot dead by straight firing of 5 policemen after only a small chase of 5-6 minutes. Osama because a victim of excessive power and uncontrolled authority of Islamabad police.

Exactly after one month of Osama’s brutal killing, on February 2nd four people were killed after convey of five speeding vehicles of the Federal Ombudsperson for the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplaces Kashmala Tariq’s protocol broke a signal and crashed into a car and motorcycle on Srinagar Highway Islamabad. The car which hit the victim’s car was allegedly drove by Kashmala’s son and one vehicle bore a government number plate. Four young men who belonged to a small village of District Mansehra became victim of movement of powerful ruling elite on the streets of Islamabad without bothering about the lives of ordinary people and as always within few days families of the victims had no other option but to enter in a compromise with the powerful accused and accept blood money for the lives of their young sons.

Then in the month of July residents of Islamabad once again witnessed a horrific crime. Usman Mirza and his three accomplices who are running property business in Islamabad, who are also working for some political party, sexually assaulted, abused and tortured a couple in an apartment in sector E-11/2 in Islamabad. Not only they tortured the couple but they made their video which went viral like wildfire. The young couple became victim of filthy gangsters who blackmail young people specially girls by making their videos through hidden cameras installed at various guest houses and rental properties in Islamabad.

Last but not the least, the crime which has caused outrage not only amongst the residents of Islamabad only was the ruthless slaughtering of young 27 years old Noor Mukadam allegedly by a spoiled, rich, unsupervised psychopath Zahir Jaffer on July 20 just a day before Eid ul Azha at accused’s residence in sector F-7/4 Islamabad. The incident was so horrific that it was hard to believe that someone could be tortured to this extent.

While discussing all these events my wife and I came to conclusion that no visible steps have been taken by the authorities to prevent residents from such incidents and to develop a sense of security among the ordinary citizens of Islamabad other then few tweets by DC Islamabad on every such incident, followed by a press conference by the police officials and putting the case before the court. To an ordinary citizen it seems like that capital is owned and ruled by few powerful gangsters, land grabbers, unsupervised rich spoiled brats, ruling elite and their children and uncontrolled governmental authorities which can take your life at any time and in any way they want or they can abuse and torture you and no one will hold them accountable because of their connections and deep pockets. This sense of insecurity at present amongst the residents of the safest city of Pakistan was never before.

Take care of your family and friends before anyone one of us becomes a victim of these filthily powerful people controlling Islamabad. Otherwise, our name, like so many others before, will only be left as a hashtag on social media and not so long after will be totally forgotten.
