KARACHI: Two guards of a private security firm, who were deployed outside the Federal Board of Revenue’s regional office in Karachi, were killed here on Monday.
Police say the guards might be hit by the same group, which had been involved in the murder of traffic police over the last couple of weeks.
“The guards’ uniform resembled with that of police so that militants might have m killed them, thinking there were policemen,” said Additional IG Mushtaq Mehar, the city police chief.
According to details the guards were killed by unknown assailants riding motorbike. “As a result of firing they got critically injured and were rushed to nearby hospital but both succumbed to their injuries,” told assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gulshan Abdullah Memon told, adding both were identified as Tanzeem and Faqira.
Earlier this month, deputy superintendent of traffic police and his driver were killed near Nine Zero, sealed headquarters of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
According to police unknown assailants riding motorcycle opened fire at DSP Traffic Muhammad Hanif Khan near Liaquat Ali Khan Chowk – former Mokka Chowk – as result of which DSP died on the sport whereas his driver Constable Sultan got critically injured. Both deceased and wounded policemen were rushed to hospital; however, Sultan succumbed to his wounds.
Police gathered empty shells from the spot and kicked off investigations. According to police the assailants had opened fire from both sides of the vehicles.
The then additional IG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo while talking to reporters said bullet shells of a 9mm pistol were found from the scene. He said the militants involved in last two attacks on police personnel have been traced, and those behind today’s killings will be brought to book as well.
Friday’s attack on police personnel is the latest in a series of assaults on law enforcers in the city in recent months. On July 24, assailants riding a motorbike shot dead a traffic police constable and wounded another on busy Abul Hasan Ispahani Road in the Gulshan-i-Iqbal area.
That incident, the second one in less than four days as three policemen were earlier killed in Korangi on July 21, had left a question mark over the effectiveness of the targeted operation in Karachi and the performance of the law enforcement agencies.
Meanwhile, the funeral prayers of martyred Deputy Superintendent of Police Muhammad Hanif Khan, Police Constable Sultan Ahmed, Traffic Section Karimabad were held in the Special Security Unit Headquarters after Juma Prayers.
The martyred police officers were fired upon by the assailants resulting injuries to both the Traffic Police Officers. The officers succumbed to their injuries.
The funeral prayers were attended by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Corps Commander Karachi Lt. General Shahid Baig Mirza, DG Rangers Major General Muhammad Saeed, Home Minister Mr. Sohail Anwar Siyal, IGP Sindh Mr. A.D Khowaja, Additional IGP Karachi Range Mr. Ghulam Qadir Thebo, Commandant SSU Mr. Maqsood Ahmed and other senior police officers, including Commandos of SSU.
