DABS unable to repair destroyed pylons in Kunduz

KUNUZ CITY: Destroyed power pylons may not be repaired without a military offensive in advance in the capital of northern Kunduz province, an official said.

Two days back, the Taliban blew up two power pylons in Khawaja Gultan area of Kunduz City and damaged a third, disconnecting electricity supply for long hours in Kunduz, Baghlan and Kabul provinces.

Hameedullah, Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS) head for Kunduz, said the Khawaja Ghaltan area was under Taliban’s control making it impossible to repair the destroyed pylons until security forces conducted an operation to drive the Taliban from the area.

Hameedullah said the bombing of electricity pylons only cut off electricity to Baghlan province and residents there remained deprived of the facility. He added DABS planned to supply electricity from the same pylons to Kabul.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for bombing the pylons. A Taliban spokesman said the Kabul administration and US forces had imposed brutal restrictions on people living in areas under Taliban.

He said no civil services, including electricity and health facilities, existed in areas under their control. He warned if electricity was not extended to areas under their control, Kabul would also witness outages.

Government officials have not spoken about the issue.
