Food review: A pizza slice at the new Virginia General Assembly building

Ned here, back from the new General Assembly building’s just-opened café/snack bar, Meriwether’s at the Capitol.

What’s happening: The spacious, first-floor eatery includes a big, beautiful pizza oven at the center.

Of note: You smell it before you see it.

  • Maybe this is just a short-term ventilation issue, but one of the best features of the building’s grand new lobby is the unmistakable scent of freshly baked pizza that hits you when you walk in the door.

My thought bubble: Let’s be real, the slice pictured above isn’t the most enticing. Like, what’s up with that pepperoni placement?

  • But looks aren’t everything. It had a nice, crispy undercarriage, a little bit of doughy give in the middle and the right amount of sauce.

The bottom line: I’ve eaten worse pizza that looked prettier.

  • But I choose to believe they’re still working some kinks out. And if not, they also had lots of other sandwich and salad options that looked promising.
