Govt, NCHD, UNICEF to set up child protection unit: Ghani

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) and UNICEF Monday agreed to set up child protection units in all the districts of the province for welfare of destitute street children.

This was agreed in a meeting held here at KP assembly secretariat under the chairmanship of Speaker KP Assembly Mushtaq Ghani.

Chairman NCHD Justice (R) Ali Nawaz Chohan, Dr Begum Jan, Secretary Social Welfare, and representatives of UNICEF.

The participants of the meeting appreciated initiative of KP Assembly speaker for setting up “Zamong Kor” for destitute children and observed that such steps would protect children from exploitation.

Speaker KP assembly on the occasion emphasized on legislation to curb child labour, sexual harassment and kidnapping. He directed department of Social Welfare to sit with UNICEF and finalize recommendations for new legislation.

He said that “Zamong Kor” was a flagship project and PTI government was taking measures to make KP province as a model in protection of rights of street children.
