Measles breaks out in Khyber’s Loy-Shelman area

LANDI KOTAL: More than twenty children have got measles in Isagi and Nalay Kelly, Ghunda Khel, Loy-Shelman, the remote and bordering area of Tehsil Landi Kotal district Khyber.

Residents of the area informed that the virus of the disease had spread in the atmosphere and infants of every second house were affected by it.

The areas lacked basic health facilities and being  poor segment of the society, the dwellers demanded of the health department to control the fatal disease and provide health safety to the infants.

According to the local vaccinator under Expanded Programme of Immunization, routine vaccination to the children was in progress and almost all children had been administered a vaccine against the disease.

Providing information regarding measles Dr. Khalid Javed said, it is viral disease and fever, redness in eyes and developing red blisters on the body are the preliminary symptoms of measles.

After the initial signs appeared, the disease remained for three days and then it reversed to recuperate, he opined.

He further said that the virus of fatal disease can survive for 28 days in air and can affect weak and unvaccinated children.

He cautioned not to apply domestic tips on your child but after get infected with the virus contact the nearest doctor and provide soft food and more fluid to the patient.

In the disease prevention is more important than cure and said that the parents should administer a two-dose anti-measles vaccine to their children at the age of nine and fifteen months respectively, he directed.

When District Health Officer Dr Zafar was contacted on the matter he said that teams of health officials had been dispatched that would vaccinate the remaining children against the disease in addition to adopting all necessary initiatives to ensure the health of the children.
