Naqeebullah case: Rao Anwar fails to appear before ATC due to ill health

F.P. Report

KARACHI: The suspended SSP Rao Anwar failed to appear before the anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Naqeebullah Mehsud murder case because of poor health conditions on Wednesday.

Naqeebullah Mehsud was killed in a fake encounter by a police team headed by Rao Anwar in Karachi on January 13 this year.

In today’s hearing, the jail authorities informed the court that Rao Anwar has fallen sick and submitted Rao Anwar’s medical certificate to the court and according to report suspended SSP can’t be presented before the court due to his sickness.

The court showed displeasure over the absence of the investigating officer SSP Dr Rizwan as he also didn’t appear before the court and court then immediately summoned Dr Rizwan.

The court ordered authorities to ensure Rao Anwar appearance in next hearing. In case Rao Anwar fails to appear, then the doctor who issued the medical certificate can be summoned, the court ruled.

The court then adjourned the hearing till May 14.

On April 21, the ATC had sent Rao Anwar on a judicial remand which ended today. Investigation officer SSP Central Dr Rizwan had requested the court for time to submit the final charge sheet as inquiry by the joint investigation team had not been completed yet.

A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) formed under the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan found the suspended Malir SSP Rao Anwar responsible for the killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud and three others in an alleged fake encounter in Karachi.
