New Zealand defeat West Indies by 47 runs in first T20

NELSON: New Zealand convincingly beat West Indies in the first T20 by 47 runs at Saxton Oval in Nelson on Friday.

Debutant Rance took two wickets in successive balls in his second over, including the wicket of Chris Gayle and it clearly disturb the touring batting lineup and they all our in the 19th over.

New Zealand set the target 188 runs for seven with their total bolstered by 25 off the final over by Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee.

But the West Indies were never looked like reaching the targetafter Chris Gayle fell cheaply. It left the West Indies at 19 for two and they never recovered from the initial setback.

In the 19th over the reigning World T20 Champion were all out and New Zealand won the match 47 runs. Rance returned the impressive figures of three for 30, while Tim Southee took three for 36.

The second match in the series is in Mount Maunganui on Monday.
