PM’s Office receives summary for appointment of top military brass

ISLAMABAD: :The Prime Minister Office on Wednesday confirmed that it had received the summary from the Defence Ministry for the appointment of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).
“The PM’s Office has received the summary from the Ministry of Defence with a panel of names for the appointment of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Army Staff,” the official Twitter account of the PM Office said. “The Prime Minister will take a decision on the appointments as per the laid down procedure,” it said.
Earlier by midnight, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a tweet had said that General Headquarters (GHQ) had forwarded the summary to the Ministry of Defence for selection of CJCSC and COAS, containing names of six senior-most Lieutenant Generals.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Wednesday that the summary sent by the Ministry of Defence for the appointment of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Army Staff has been received by the Prime Minister’s Office.
In a statement, she said in the summary, a panel of names has been forwarded for the selection of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Chief of the Army Staff. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will decide on these appointments according to the prescribed procedure, she remarked.
Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has said the federal cabinet and the coalition partners will be taken on board regarding the appointment of new Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
Talking to media persons here in Islamabad on Wednesday, he said the uncertainty in media regarding the appointment of next Army Chief will likely be ended in next one or two days.
Responding to a question, the Defence Minister said important decisions like the appointment of Army Chief should be taken in the best interest of the country and the nation in light of the Constitution and law without having any political considerations.
