Russia to carry out night maneuvering drills, using Mi-24, Mi-8 military helicopters

YEKATERINBURG: Russian military is prepared to start off night maneuvering drills by using Mi-24 gunships and Mi-8 military transport helicopters in the regions of Ural and Siberia confirmed the Military District’s press office on February 1st.

The press office has given more details regarding the military exercise stating that the crews of Mi-24 gunships and Mi-8 military transport helicopters of Russia’s Central Military District will carry out “night maneuvering at low and ultra-low altitudes”.

This will be a part of drills that have begin at four airfields in three Russian regions, the District’s press office stated.

Furthermore, the press statement mentioned other drills stating that, “During the night exercise at military aerodromes in the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Novosibirsk Regions, over 100 military pilots will practice combat training tasks to reconnoiter the areas of a notional enemy’s location, maneuvering at low and ultra-low altitudes and also take-offs and landings at snow-covered unprepared sites in the flat and forested terrain.”

During this time, the crews will practice over 20 tactical episodes that will involve more than 30 Mi-24 gunships and Mi-8 military transport helicopters, over 500 flight and ground personnel and flight control teams.

Additionally, the pilots will run the combat helicopters using GEO-ONV-1 night vision goggles as special onboard equipment. Along with this drills will also carry out landing tactical airborne groups without parachutes.

The authorities have notified that the drills will conclude in the second half of February.
