KABUL: At least three people have been arrested on charges of publicly lashing a woman with sticks in northeastern Takhar province of Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) officials said the three men were arrested by the security forces from Chah Aab district.

MoI spokesman Najib Danish confirmed the arrest of the suspects and said the father-in-law of the woman is also among those arrested.

He said the woman has been shifted a safe house in a bid to provide her shelter and protect her from further harms.

This comes as public lashing following a dessert trial of the woman sparked furor among the people amid growing violence against the women in the country.

A video of the woman was published online recently and is being circulated by the social media users who have been infuriated with the brutal beating of the woman by a mob in Takhar province.

According to the local officials, the woman was accused of illicit sexual relations by a tribal court in Chah Aab district.

The video purportedly shows the women being beaten by a mob of angry men who are also chanting Allah Akbar besides insulting the woman.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Sanatullah Temori had earlier said the local government will take immediate and strict actions regarding the brutal beating of the woman.

He said the arrest warrants of those involved in the trial of the woman have been issued insisting that the government will deal with the case seriously.
