LAHORE: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) appointed former Pakistan pace bowler Aaqib Javed as the fast bowling coach of the national team on Saturday.
Javed will assume the role immediately and work until the conclusion of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, to be played in the West Indies and the USA.
“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of former Pakistan pace bowler Aaqib Javed as the national team’s fast-bowling coach,” an SLC statement said.
“He will work with the national team until the completion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”
“We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” said Ashley De Silva, CEO of SLC.
The right-handed pacer previously served as the bowling coach for Pakistan, during their successful ICC T20 World Cup winning campaign in 2009.
He also oversaw the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earning the ODI status and qualifying for the ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia during his tenure as the head coach.
Aaqib Javed was also the coach of Pakistan’s Under-19 team when they won the U19 World Cup in 2004.
He has been the head coach of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars since 2017. Qalandars won back-to-back PSL trophies in 2022 and 2023 under Javed.
Javed has represented Pakistan in 163 ODIs and 22 Test matches for Pakistan, bagging 236 international wickets and was also part of the country’s World Cup-winning team in 1992.
