Bagram airbase set for transition to Afghan forces

KABUL (Pajhwok): America’s largest military base in central Afghanistan will transition to the government security forces, US and Afghan officials say. Citing an unnamed US military spokesman, ITV reported the Bagram Air Base in Parwan province would change hands soon.

Meanwhile, AFP also quoted a US defence official as saying: “I can confirm we will hand over Bagram Air Base.” However, the official did not specify when the transfer would happen. Built by the Soviets in the 1980s, Bagram airbase is the largest military facility used by US and NATO forces in the country.

The media outlet quoted an Afghan security official as saying the handover was expected in about three weeks. The Ministry of Defence has formed special committees to manage the transfer.

With US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan ongoing, some US bases, helicopters, military vehicles and weapons could be turned over to the Afghan army. US Central Command says the withdrawal is between 30-44 percent complete and that six facilities have now been given to Afghan security forces.
