Controversy erupts: Allegations of rigging rock City following general elections

PESHAWAR: Following the conclusion of the General Elections 2024 across Pakistan, allegations of rigging have emerged, stirring controversy and casting doubt on the integrity of the electoral process. In Peshawar, the capital city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, these accusations have intensified as local candidates’ level criticism against the Deputy Commissioner/District Returning Officer (DC) and other officials.

Several candidates from Peshawar District have come forward, alleging that the DC Peshawar orchestrated electoral fraud by manipulating Form 47, contradicting the information provided in Form 45 issued by presiding officers. Similar accusations have been directed at Returning Officers in the region, raising concerns about the transparency and fairness of the electoral procedures.

When approached by Frontier Post for comment, the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar vehemently denied all allegations of wrongdoing. He asserted that the district administration diligently ensured the conduct of free and fair elections, emphasizing the cooperation received from the local populace. According to the DC, the inhabitants of Peshawar demonstrated unwavering support and confidence in the administration throughout the electoral process.

Expressing commitment to transparency, the Deputy Commissioner affirmed that he and his team worked tirelessly to uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the electoral process. He reiterated the open-door policy of his office, emphasizing their role as public servants dedicated to serving the needs and interests of the community.

Despite assurances from the district administration, the allegations of rigging have sparked debate and raised questions about the credibility of the electoral outcomes in Peshawar. As the investigation unfolds and voices on both sides continue to be heard, the pursuit of truth and accountability remains paramount in ensuring the integrity of the democratic process.

In response to the escalating allegations of election rigging in Country, the Federal Government has taken decisive action by establishing a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to thoroughly examine the matter. This specialized team will be tasked with investigating the allegations and will also address any cases of false propaganda directed towards civil servants who were involved in overseeing the elections.
