Eight cops suffer casualties in blasts

LASHKARGAH: Eight police personnel suffered casualties as two suicide bombers attacked a security checkpoint in Greshk district in Helmand late Wednesday, officials said Thursday.

A dismounted suicide bomber attempted to hit a police post in the Parchao area of Greshk district late Wednesday night but the security forces opened fire on him before he could strike, said Omar Zwak, spokesman of Helmand governor. As a result, the explosive vest of the suicide bomber went off, killing him and wounding three police, he told media.

Meanwhile, Helmand police chief Muhammad Ismail Khpalwak told AIP that two suicide bombers were trying to attack a checkpoint in Greshk district.

The attackers opened fire on the security guards of the checkpoint, leaving a cop injured, he said. The security forces responded the fire, leaving one of the attackers dead, he added. The other suicide bomber exploded himself, leaving three cops injured. The cop, who sustained injuries as a result of firing by the attackers, succumbed to the fatal injuries, he added.

However, Helmand provincial assembly member Gul Agha Muslim said a cop was killed and seven more injured in the attack.

There was no word by Taliban in this regard. They, however, claimed their fighters killed 11 police after separate attacks in the Marjah district of the same province.
