‘Joyland’ fails to get Oscars nomination

LAHORE: Pakistani controversial movie ‘Joyland’ garnered many awards and nominations internationally. However, the Sarmad Khoosat production somehow could not make it to the Academy Awards nominations.

Joyland made it to many great heights despite facing countless oppositions and hurdles in the homeland. Though, it proved a banger from the very start to artists and fans worldwide.

The movie garnered accolades and recognition worldwide and set high expectations but somehow it failed to bag the International Feature Film category for the 95th Oscars.

Joyland’s glory was very persistent having all eyes set on it eager to see the film accomplish being the first Pakistani production to get Oscars as it entice several Hollywood and Bollywood stars including Priyanka Chopra.

The Saim Sadiq directorial, last month was included in the list of 15 movies that advanced to the nominations stage ahead of the award ceremony in March.

The movie garnered “Queer Palm” prize in the Cannes Film Festival for best feminist-themed movie and further won Jury Prize in the “Un Certain Regard” competition. Saim Sadiq’s debut also makes it to the ongoing Sundance Film Festival 2023 in the US.

The movie went through a hard time in Pakistan as after being cleared by the censor board, it was banned in Punjab for containing highly objectionable material that opposes religious and social values in Pakistan.
