KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): A number of residents of southern Kandahar province have demanded of the government to extend the period for registration of right-hand-drive vehicles and reduce the registration fee.
They say the three-month duration of the registration process of right-hand-drive vehicles is short and the fee taken in exchange for documents should be reduced given the poor economic situation of the people.
Saleh Mohammad, a resident of Kandahar city, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the General Directorate of Traffic had set a period of three months for the registration of right-hand-drive vehicles.
He said the fee for issuing documents for three years according to the model of each car was 5300 afghanis to 7000 afghanis, which he said most people could not afford.
Some other residents urged the government to provide permanent documents to right-hand-drive vehicles instead of temporary documents for three years. Khalid Ahmad, a resident of Kandahar City, said people’s economic situation was not good and it would be difficult for them to renew documents after every three years.
He said the government should register right-hand-drive vehicles in the form of cooperation and assistance with the people.
Taxi drivers also said they could not afford to pay the amount for temporary documents.
Taxi driver Hikmatullah told Pajhwok that he could hardly earn 300 afghanis per day, so how he would pay 21,000 afghanis. “Our demand is the amount should be reduced.”
Kandahar Traffic Manager Mullah Bashir Akhund said they had no authority to increase or decrease the registration fee or extend the during of the registration process.
He said the money was submitted in the bank and representatives of the police headquarters and intelligence also monitored this process.
