ISLAMABAD: An accountability court has granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) 10-day physical remand of former president Asif Ali Zardari, on Tuesday.
During the hearing of the case, NAB officials had requested the court for 14-day physical remand of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader.
NAB prosecutor Muzaffar Abbasi informed the court that fake bank accounts were opened with the help of bank officials. Abbasi added that Zardari had been arrested and his remand was necessary for investigation.
PPP leader requested the court for further facilities in NAB prison. He also requested for an attendant and medical facilities.
The NAB prosecutor further informed the court that evidence for Zardari’s arrest would be presented, adding there were eight ground for this. According to the prosecutor, Asif Ali Zardari did money laundering through his frontman.
The court has ordered Zardari to be presented before the court on June 21.
At least 500 police personnel were been deployed around the federal capital for security purpose. At least 300 policemen were been deployed for security purpose outside NAB headquarters, while roads leading to accountability court will remain closed for all kind of traffic.
Moreover, PPP workers will not be allowed to go beyond Para Chowk, while the anti-riot force has been deployed at Faizabad and other entry points.
On Monday, NAB arrested Zardari in the fake bank accounts case from Islamabad.
A team of NAB officials had reached the Zardari House in the federal capital hours after a bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) — comprising Justices Amir Farooq and Moshin Akhtar Kayani — had rejected a plea filed by Zardari and his sister, Faryal Talpur, seeking an extension in their interim bail in the fake bank accounts case.
In the orders it issued, the IHC allowed the NAB to arrest Zardari and Talpur, both of whom, now, have the option to appeal the order in the Supreme Court.
