PDMA launches rescue training for students

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial Disaster management authority has initiated awareness campaign and simulation drills in the educational institutions in 14 districts of the province in an attempt to train and sensitize students and teachers in dealing with natural disasters, terrorist attacks, fire break outs and providing first aid in emergency situations.

According to spokesperson for PDMA, the first phase of the exercise will be carried out in hundreds of schools till June this year whereas the second phase will be initiated after the summer vacations. So far, the trainings have been completed in three educational institutions of Peshawar including GHSS Shaheed Osama Zafar, GHS Jogiwara and Government College Peshawar.

According to details, students and teachers are being trained in adopting safety standards during earthquakes, floods, storms, fire breakout, evacuation & Lockdown procedures and basic first aid skills. Moreover, trainings are also being provided for dealing with situations arising out of terrorist attacks.

According to the Deputy Director PDMA, Muhammad Shakeel, this initiative has been taken to create awareness and train our students and teachers in handling emergency situations as most of the fatalities during natural disasters and emergency situations arise simply because of lack of information and proper training.

The first phase of the trainings will be carried out till June of the ongoing year whereas the second phase of the program will be launched after the summer vacations. During the training sessions, students and teachers are also being shown documentaries and short films on effective disaster management. Similarly, pamphlets and brochures will also be distributed among students and teachers in order to minimize the casualties during any unfortunate incidents.
