KABUL: A local police commander among three persons was killed and two others wounded after a clash between Taliban and local police in northeastern Kunduz province, police said Tuesday.

Taliban fighters attacked an outpost of local police in Zarkharid area, northern outskirts of Kunduz city, early Tuesday morning, said Inamuddin Rahmani, spokesman of Kunduz police.

The ensuing clash lasted for around one hour, leaving commander of the post, Sheikh Zaher, and two cops wounded, he told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).

The commander succumbed to wounds while on way to hospital while the two cops under treatment, police said, adding the Taliban also suffered casualties but they had no accurate count.

A local resident, meanwhile, told AIP by phone that two civilians caught in the crossfire were also martyred.

He said it was unclear if the civilians were killed by security forces’ fire or Taliban.

Abdul Zaher a.k.a Mullah Zaher and Sheikh Zaher was a former Taliban. He joined the government sometime ago and set up an outpost to check Taliban movement in the Zarkharid area.

There was no word by Taliban in this regard.
