Sharjeel holds meeting with WB Senior Transport Specialist

Karachi: Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon on Thursday held an other meeting with World Bank’s Senior Transport Specialist Lincoln Flor regarding BRT Yellow Line at his office.

It was agreed after detailed review of PC-I and 2 alternate proposals of BRT Yellow Line to hold further meeting and take a final decision in a week.

Sharjeel Inam Memon while talking to the representative of the World Bank said that in order to further optimise the Yellow Line project and make it economic successful model, 2 alternative proposals have been prepared in addition to its PC-1 . ‘ The alternative proposals have also been shared with the World Bank,’ the minister said and added that the Sindh government is making serious efforts to upgrade the public transport system in the city. He added that recently , People’s Bus Service have been launched on major common routes of the city with a cost of Rs. 8 billion. The people bus service is a successful model with a fleet of 250 hybrid diesel buses. He further said that the People’s Bus Service is being run in partnership with National Radio Transmission Company a federal government organization.

The minister said that people’s bus service has gained immense popularity among the citizens in a short span of time. Sharjeel added that Sindh government wants to launch BRT Yellow Line as an other successful public transport model.

He said that the government has proposed the reduction in its infrastructure cost and increase the fleet of Yellow Line buses, besides minimizing government costs in terms of annual subsidy. World Bank senior transport specialist Lincoln Flor said Karachi is their priority.

The World Bank is committed to providing all possible support to the Sindh government in developing Karachi’s public transport infrastructure. Secretary Transport Abdul Haleem Shaikh, senior officer of the Sindh government Zubair Chana, Managing Director Sindh Mass Transit Authority Altaf Sario, Project Director BRT Yellow Line Fazal Ameer, Nespak and Dar Consultants’ representatives also attended the meeting.
