SHC allows GDA’s Zulfiqar, Fahmida Mirza to contest elections

F.P. Report

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday allowed Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) candidates Fahmida Mirza and Zulfiqar Mirza to contest elections.

The Sindh High Court accepted the constitutional petition against the decisions of the Returning Officers and the Election Tribunal.

However, the court remarked that a detailed judgment will be issued later. “You could not satisfy us on any point,” the SHC Chief Justice told counsel for the petitioner who raised objection.

Why are banking laws being referred along with election laws? Chief Justice Aqeel Abbasi questioned.

The petitioner wrote in the petition that Zulfiqar Mirza is a candidate for one seat in the National Assembly and three seats in the Sindh Assembly.

Fahmida Mirza and Zulfiqar Mirza are GDA candidates from NA-223, the petitioner said.

The Returning Officer also rejected the nomination papers of Zulfikar Mirza from PS70, 71 and 72 and the Election Tribunal also upheld the decision of the Returning Officer.

Counsel for the petitioner, counsel for the private bank and counsel for Mirzas appeared before the court.

The court accepted the applications of Fahmida Mirza and Zulfiqar Mirza and allowed them to contest elections.
