WSSP financial crisis

Water supply and Sanitation Service Company was formed to ensure smooth drinking water supply and better sanitation facilities in urban areas. On the contrary, the duration of clean drinking water supply has been reduced, supply disruption has become frequent and sanitation system has become dilapidated. The disposal of solid waste by shifting it to Shamshato dumping ground outside Peshawar is not satisfactory.

WSSP had increased water supply, sanitation and conservancy charges but even then the company is facing a deficit of Rs.310.80 million in the capital city of Peshawar. It is short of money to pay the electricity bills of water supply tube wells. The management of the company has now requested the provincial government to make payment Rs.70 million to PESCO to avoid disconnection of electricity to tube wells. Summer has sit in and disconnection of PESCO meters will make worse drinking water supply situation to dwellers of the city. When WSSP was launched there was a loud talk of converting the water supply tube wells to solar systems. In the previous provincial government solar tube wells were sunk in the rural areas of very deep water table adjacent to Peshawar city, which cater to needs of the people for irrigation and clean drinking water. It is beyond comprehension as to why solar tube wells projects were not implemented in the city of Peshawar? Were there technical reasons hindering the launch of solar water supply projects?
