Afghanistan launches anti-polio campaign

KABUL (Khaama Press): The Ministry of Public Health announced the four-day polio vaccination campaign across 23 country provinces on Monday.
The campaign, which got underway on May 15, intends to immunize 6.4 million kids in 23 provinces.
The campaign came a day after the country reported the first case of the poliovirus of 2023, as it was detected in the eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.
According to the statement released by the Public health ministry, a four-year-old child has been identified as having a decrease in the province.
Compared to previous years, the cases of Polio have declined as the two cases were reported last year.
However, the cases of Polio were more in 2020 as a total of 56 cases were reported. As a result, it would increase the chances of the disease’s recurrence.
Therefore, the Ministry of Public Health has also started a public awareness campaign to inform the masses about the value of vaccination in eradicating polio disease.
Meanwhile, the Ministry collaborates with international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), to ensure the successful execution of the immunization campaign.
The Ministry has also urged parents to assist vaccine providers and ensure their children receive the shot.
