Earthquake casualties in Herat’s Zindajan reach over 1,200: UN

KABUL (Khaama Press): The United Nations Coordination Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has stated that in the earthquake on Saturday, 1,294 people were killed and 688 others were injured in the Zenda Jan district of Herat province.
OCHA reports that there are currently 485 individuals missing, comprising 191 men and 294 women.
According to OCHA’s report, six houses, three schools, three kindergartens, and two educational centres in this district have been destroyed, and eight other schools have also been damaged.
The UN organization added that 33 unaccompanied children, 17 elderly individuals without caregivers, and 53 women heading households have been identified in this district.
On Saturday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 shook Herat province.
Meanwhile, The Afghanistan Ministry of Disaster Management has reported that 4,000 people were killed or injured on Saturday in the Herat earthquake. They mentioned that 1,983 houses were destroyed across 20 villages in Herat.
The Taliban has not released specific casualty figures—currently, 35 search and rescue teams with a thousand personnel work at the earthquake site.
On the other hand, Herat experienced its third earthquake on Monday, October 9, 2023, with a magnitude of 5.1, following previous quakes measuring 4.7 and 4.9. This ongoing seismic activity is causing growing concerns for the future, especially with winter approaching.
Relief workers highlight dire conditions, particularly for women and children in the Zindajan district, where the earthquakes have significantly affected their physical and mental well-being, adding to their grief and loss.
