Five candidates submit forms for Karachi’s deputy mayor election

F.P. Report

KARACHI: At least five candidates belonging to different political parties have submitted nomination forms to contest the upcoming elections for Karachi’s deputy mayor.

The deadline for submission of forms expired today.

Arshad Hussain and Mansoor Ahmed from Mutahidda Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) submitted their forms. While Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) nominated its local leader Akramullah for the slot of deputy mayor.

Similarly, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also nominated one member each from their parties.

On March 28, an interview panel of the MQM-P, comprising party leaders Faisal Sabzwari, Abdul Waseem and Shaikh Salahuddin, had shortlisted the candidates for deputy mayor’s slot and forwarded their names to the party’s Rabita Committee.

MQM Rabita Committee then convened a session of the executive committee to finalize the name of the party’s candidate.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) last week announced that the election of deputy mayor Karachi will be held on April 18.

The office was vacated due to disqualification of Arshad Vohra for switching party loyalty after being elected to his position. His former party MQM-P had approached the election commission to de-seat Vohra for switching loyalty to the Mustafa Kamal-led Pak Sarzameen Party.

According to the ECP schedule for the election the nomination papers of the candidates for the deputy mayor will be received till March 29 (tomorrow).

Over 302 members of Karachi’s City Council will use their right to vote to elect the new deputy mayor of the city.
