KABUL: Funeral prayers for former president Sibghatullah Mujaddedi was offered at the Presidential Palace in Kabul on Wednesday. President Ashraf Ghani, political figures and foreign diplomats attended the funeral.

The funeral payers, offered at around 10: 00am, were attended by CEO Abdullah, Vice-President Sarwar Danish, ex-president Hamid Karzai and renowned jihadi figure Abdul Rab Rasool Sayyaf.

Some cabinet members, parliamentarians, jihadi commanders, Mujaddedi’s relatives and Kabul-based foreign diplomats also participated in the last rites for the spiritual leader.

A member of Mujaddedi’s family said the National Liberation Front leader would be laid to rest in Ashiqan and Arifan area in the first police district of Kabul.

Mujaddedi was chosen as president during the interim government (after the collapse of the communist regime in 1992) as president.

Ghani said after the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan, Mujaddedi encouraged leaders of jihadi factions and the people towards peace, unity and rebuilding of the country.

In 2003, Mujaddedi served as chairman of the Loya Jirga — or Grand Assembly — that approved Afghanistan’s new constitution for a post-Taliban era.

He also chaired a four-day gathering of around 2,500 tribal elders in 2013 to endorse a security agreement under which the United States would keep troops in Afghanistan to train Afghan forces and conduct counterterrorism operations.

Earlier, President Ghani said Mujaddedi had unprecedented love for his country and people and supported the system until his demise — a great loss for Afghanistan and its people. (Pajhwok)
