At least 49 school girls fainted in Lashkargah city

LASHKARGAH (AIP): At least 49 female students of a school fainted due to unknown causes in Lashkargah, capital of Helmand province, education and health officials said Monday.

Ahmad Bilal, deputy academic director of Helmand education department, told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) that 17 students of Central High School for Girls in Lashkargah city collapsed on Monday. They were taken to the hospital for treatment.

He said the condition of the patients was stable while the prosecutors have started investigations to ascertain cause of the incident.

He said the victims were the students of grade 10. It was unclear if the school girls collapsed due to consuming poisonous food, drinks or odour.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Barak, head of Helmand’s Boost Hospital said 29 victims have been brought to the hospital so far.

Another official, however, told AIP on condition of anonymity that 49 school girls, who had gone to their homes, were brought to the hospital by their relatives.

According to doctors, most of the patients were provided oxygen immediately after they were received at the hospital.

Several such incidents also happened in different regions of Afghanistan in the past the government failed find its exact causes.
