Parliamentary election cannot be held on scheduled time: IEC

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has said the parliamentary election may not be held on its scheduled time of 7th July 2018 and may be delayed for another three or four months.

Talking to journalists here on Sunday (Feb. 04), IEC commissioner Syed Hafizullah Hashmi said three or four months were wasted after the announcement of parliamentary election’s schedule and it appeared that the election would be delayed for the same period. He said they were working on a schedule that could be implemented.

Credible sources in the election commission, meanwhile, told Afghan media if the parliamentary election is delayed for three months then holding elections would not be possible due to winter season in most of the provinces.

Though it is estimated that parliamentary election would be held along with presidential election, people fear that the presidential election would also be delayed.

IEC Chairman Gula Jan Abdul Badee Sayyad while addressing a presser today said recruitment of election staff has been started.

He said preparations were underway for holding parliamentary elections. He insisted on holding transparent election in the country.
