Peace, anti-terror war simultaneously pursued

KABUL: National Security Advisor Mohammad Hanif Atmar has said besides working to advance the peace process the government is simultaneously pursuing its counterterrorism strategy.

Addressing the third “High Level Security Conference” in the Russian city of Sochi, Atmar said “terrorism is a common regional threat that does not belong to a single country. With the expansion of terrorism, the global community would suffer.”

Atmar was quoted as saying by Qader Shah, spokesman and strategic relations head at the National Security Council (NSC), on Thursday.

The NSA said insecurity was being caused by three phenomena —extremism which is created by international terrorist groups — criminal economy which is supported by global criminal groups and the third one is states who sponsor and support terrorism and use it as their foreign policy tool.”

“Let me clarify that human trafficking is conducted from Afghanistan to the world while militants are being imported to Afghanistan and this is done by international criminal organizations and there is need for an effective campaign against these groups,” he said.

Atmar said Afghanistan was simultaneously working on two-pronged strategy — peace and war on terrorism.

“We can strike a peace deal with the Taliban because they are Afghans, but we cannot negotiate with foreigners who are not Afghans and to counter them, we have formulated a strategy,” Atmar told the meeting.

He thanked partner countries —-the US, India, China, Iran, Arab countries including Saudi Arabia and the UAE for their cooperation with Afghanistan in the fight against terrorism.
