Trump’s acquittal from impeachment

Donald Trump acquitted of inciting the horrific attack on the US Capitol, concluding a historic impeachment trial that spared him on Saturday, the first-ever conviction of a current or former US president. About more than a month ago, the deadly Jan. 6 riot that stunned the whole world, the US Senate convened a session on weekend to deliver its verdict through voting at the Capitol Hills. The quick trial of a former president, who unleashed a mob of supporters to “fight like hell” for him at the Capitol just as Congress was certifying his opponent’s victory. As hundreds of his supporters stormed the Iconic building and for hours remained engaged in battle with police. During this invasion, US lawmakers stopped the meeting and fled to save their lives. About five people died and dozens got injuries, while US national guards controlled the Security of the capitol.

The criminal act was denounced all over the world and it also garnered bipartisan condemnation from US lawmakers. All termed it an attack on democracy, while democrats vowed to move impeachment trial of Donald J. Trump, however, due to shortage of time impeachment trial could not be materialized during his presidency. After completion of transition of the new administration, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent the article of impeachment to the Senate. The House impeached Trump on the sole charge of incitement of insurrection one week after the riot, but the pace of trial could not be expedited because the Senate was not in full session.

During trial the prosecutors argued that Trump’s incited the mob by stoking the months-long campaign with a violent rhetoric and false claims that unleashed the mob. While, Trump’s lawyers said that his words were not intended to incite the violence. The judgment of the impeachment, on votes of 57-43, seven Republican Senators joined the Democrats, however, they could not reached to two-third majority required to pass the bill. After a long debate on witnesses of Trump’s action during riot, both sides ended up in no result and Trump got acquittal from his second impeachment.

The outcome of impeachment trial left the issue unresolved, and the American nation remained divided over this sensitive case of political violence and criminal riot at the prestigious National Institution. All this scenario clearly depicts that in the world biggest democracy, the politics got preference over national prestige and powerful has limitless defenses to evade the penalty.
