IED explodes, polio team survives attack

TIMERGARA: A polio team comprised of two health workers and a security official remained unhurt luckily when an improvised explosive device went up near them at Arif Kaly Khwar in the jurisdiction of Munda Lower Dir police station on Tuesday, residents and police told.

They said that the team was on its way on foot to Arif Kaly to vaccinate children below five when a remote controlled IED exploded at a distance of 8 yards from them. Two health workers identified as Ikram and Fazal along with a police constable Sultan Khan were part of the team. The IED exploded with a bang spreading fear in the nearby area. All the three members of the team remained unhurt.

Talking to this reporter on contact the district health officer Dr Shaukat Ali said that apparently the polio team was the target. He said the health department would not stop its drive. The three day eradication campaign in Lower Dir started on Monday and would last on Wednesday (today), he said.

The DHO said that all polio teams had adequate security and the department would try its best to protect its teams’ members. He said that a total of 2, 92, 995 children below the age of five years would be vaccinated during the ongoing drive. The security forces after the incident reached the spot and started a search operation. The Munda police registered a case against unknown militants under section s 324, 353 CrPc and 7 ATA.

Meanwhile a man identified as Irfanullah reportedly shot dead his wife at Shawa area in the jurisdiction of Ouch police station here on Tuesday. The Ouch police arrested the alleged killer and started investigation.
