KTH saved 22 lives in ATI terrorist attack

PESHAWAR: Khyber Teaching Hospital has received a total of 22 patients injured in Agricultural Training Institution attack. The patients were brought to the Accident & Emergency Department. KTH received 25 victims out of which three (3) were dead on the scene of incident. 22 victims were immediately given the treatment. 5 of the victims were operated whereas others were treated accordingly.

Soon after the incident the Emergency was declared by the Hospital Director Dr Nek Dad and Eid ul Milad un Nabi holiday was called off. Professors, surgeons, nursing and paramedics along with non clinical staff arrived before the victims reached KTH the staff was there to handle the chaos of the sad incident.

All the patients were shifted to the Operation Theater for the surgical procedures and other relevant examination. In the OT life saving surgeries, damage control surgeries and definitive surgeries were conducted immediately. Emergency laparotomy surgeries were carried out for two injured victims. Chest tube intubation surgery was done for two victims. One of the victims of spinal injury was treated conservatively by the orthopedic professors. A team of psychiatrist lead by the professor visited all the victims and gave them counseling.

Naik Zaman 18 yrs old belonging to Tank suffered from shuttered liver and lung firearm injury was immediately brought to the OT where he was resuscitated by the operating surgeons meanwhile; a team of cardiothoracic surgeons arrived from Lady Reading Hospital and completed the damage control surgery. It is worth mentioning that only Lady Reading Hospital has a specialized cardiothoracic unit in KP.

Later on upon the directives of Honorable Chief Minister KP the hepatobiliary surgeon of Shifa International Hospital Islamabad was consulted by the Khyber Teaching Hospital administration and Naik Zaman was shifted in a well equipped ambulance of Khyber Teaching Hospital under the supervision of Assistant Professor and paramedic staff.

After proper protocol 19 stable patients were discharge while the remaining 3 patients are retained in the Hospital. The condition of the patients is stable. All medical assistance was provided from the hospital resources free of cost.

Hospital Director Dr Nek Dad and Medical Director Prof Dr Rooh-ul-Muqim visited the patients in different units and issued directives that all medicine should be provided form the IBP Pharmacy of the hospital.

Fully equipped Ambulances with drivers, doctors, nurses, paramedics, stretcher carrier were available for the victims. The residential complex of the hospital was evacuated to avoid any emergent situation.
