Afghanistan proposes fiber optic expansion with China

KABUL (TOLOnews): Najibullah Haqqani, the acting Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, has called for the expansion of the fiber optic cable at the border between Afghanistan and China up to Wakhan in Badakhshan by this country.

Najibullah Haqqani made these remarks during a meeting with the Chinese ambassador in Kabul.

According to the spokesperson for this ministry, the Chinese ambassador in Kabul, Zhao Xing, said during this meeting that Beijing is interested in extending the optical fiber through Wakhan.

Enayatullah Alokozay, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, said: “China can use Afghanistan’s geographical position instead of using the long route of neighboring countries to connect to a shorter and easier path with Afghanistan. In this meeting, the acting minister added that China and Afghanistan can expand their economic relations with mutual respect.”

Enayatullah Alokozay quoted the Chinese ambassador in Kabul as writing that Beijing has had good relations with Afghanistan throughout history and is striving to strengthen and stabilize these relations.

A number of political affairs experts believe that to solve some of the current challenges in the country, the caretaker government should further secure its good relations with China.

Amanullah Hotaki, a political affairs expert, said: “In the current situation where the world has cut off interaction with us, we need interaction with even a small country, but interaction with a country like China is a necessity that needs to be done.”

Sayed Akbar Agha, a political affairs expert, said: “China is not genuinely interacting with us. If there is real interaction, it is both in the interest of the people of Afghanistan and the people of China. We Afghans need better interactions because we are unemployed.”

The Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology wrote, quoting the Chinese ambassador, that Beijing will consult with experts on this matter.
