Family of Mashal shows reservation over ATC verdict

SWABI: Mashal Khan mother and other members of his family said that they have strong reservations about anti-terrorism court (ATC) verdict handed down in the famous alleged lynching case in Abbotabad on Wednesday.

The court has awarded death sentence to one accused, life imprisonment to five and exonerated 26 out of 58 in Mashal murder case.

Mashal a student of journalism was brutally killed on April 13 in the campus of Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan.

Before the announcing of the verdict, the mother and two sisters of Mashal had gone to nearby religious institution for Kathmul Quran and till the announcement of the verdict had remained there.

They said that they were actually not satisfied by the court verdict and expecting much more than the given decision.

They said that Iqbal Khan, Mashal’s father had gone to England and expected to reach back home on Feb 17.

The four members of the family present were Mashal’s mother, brother, Aimal Iqbal, two sisters, Storia Iqbal and Saba Iqbal, all expressed reservation.

Reacting to the court decision, she told media: “My son was brutally killed in a university. We wanted justice but that was destroyed in the court.”

She declared that they would go to the High Court Peshawar and even to Supreme Court to get justice for her butchered son. The struggle for justice would not be stopped it will continue, she said.

She questioned that those who were acquitted by the court were not present in the recorded videos.  Had they not gone there to target his son? What was their intention at the crime scene, she said.

“All the accused were involved in killing of my son,” she said.

In reply to a question, she said that so far the death sentence and life imprisonment given to six accused she was satisfied but she demanded the punishment for all accused and opposed the acquittal of 26 accused.
