Helmand’s security improving: MoD

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The security situation of Helmand has improved compared to the past due to the operations of Afghan forces, defence ministry spokesman General Daulat Waziri said on Sunday.

Talking to Afghan Islamic Press (AIP), Waziri said the security situation of Helmand had improved over the past few months. The security forces were now targeting the bases of Taliban, he added.

The Taliban have become weak in the province, he said, adding that the security forces were targeting their fighters and commanders every day.

Terming Helmand as a basic center of Taliban in the Afghan war, he said more steps would be taken to purge the province next year.

The Taliban have lost the capability of frontal gunfight, he said, adding that they were now conducting suicide and car bomb blasts in some parts of the province to mount pressure on the security forces. However, they have failed to achieve their goals, he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that gunmen attacked a border police checkpoint with explosives-laden car in Nadali district in Helmand the other day.

Incidents of insecurity occur on a regular basis in Sangin, Marjah, Garmser, Grishk and other districts of the province.

Helmand has not taken a single sigh of relief over the past 16 years. The foreign forces in highest number, most of the Americans, are deployed in this province.
