Media’s positive role imperative for peace

GILGIT: Gilgit Baltistan Chief Minister, Hafiz Hafeezur Rehman here Wednesday said the positive role of media was imperative for promotion of peace, democracy, tolerance and inter-faith harmony in the society. He said social media was a challenge and keeping in view of its different aspects, cyber crimes act has been enforced for which an effective information campaign was being run besides safety measures for assistance of general public.

The CM was addressing a seminar organized by the Police Department with assistance of Karakuram International University (KIU) on topic of ‘role of media against extremism and promotion of peace and inter-faith harmony here today. He said punishment and reward system was vital for better service delivery, increasing output of organizations and reformation of the society and keeping in view of its importance, the GB government has introduced this key system, which are producing positive results.

“The GB has largely benefited from the National Action Plan chalked out against terrorism and terrorism and the short coming of linkages among institutions was addressed.” The decisions taken by civil and military leadership during the meetings of Apex Committees for establishment of peace, harmony and development of the province were implemented in letter and spirit.

The establishment of law and order and peace was the prime responsibility of police force, he said, adding police force has been made independent from political pressure and influence in Gilgit Baltistan. In addition to provision of modern training to police force, he said all the required resources were provided and reforms were introduced in police department to make it more result oriented and effective. “Work for promotion of art and culture besides regional and mother languages was underway and artists was being encouraged.”

After Islamabad and Lahore, the Safe City project was implemented in Gilgit as result of which no incident of terrorism was reported during last two years, he maintained. “The effects of incidents occur in the country are also felt in Gilgit Baltistan,” he said, adding misunderstanding among different schools of thoughts if any could be removed by sitting together and respecting each others’ view points. He said Muslims can retain glorious past if they strictly follow the teachings of Islam. The CM has praised the role of media for discouraging such news that was harmful for peace and inter-faith harmony in the province.

He said GB would have made tremendous progress had an alternative system introduced before abolishment of FCR and Raij (enforced) system after getting independence from Dogra Raj. “All the tribes and sections of GB had demonstrated exemplary unity and cohesion against Dogra Raj and resultantly GB had achieved independence. The CM said PMLN Government has empowered people in all sphere of life and established peace in the province. He also highlighted process of evolution of politics, elections and politics parties in Gilgit Baltistan.
