Meeting discusses traffic issues of Abbottabad

PESHAWAR: An important meeting to discuss traffic issues of divisional headquarter Abbottabad, was held here on Wednesday with the Caretaker Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Justice (R) Syed Arshad Hussain Shah in the chair.

Spokesperson to Chief Minister Brigadier (R) Syed Mujtaba Tirmizi and high ups of the transport department and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) attended the meeting.

The meeting was briefed about the proposed Urban Mobility Plan for Abbottabad and, it was told that under the Urban Transport Package-II, consultancy services are under process to develop Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPS) for three major cities of the province including Peshawar, Abbottabad and Mingora.

Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPS) will have concept designs of priority urban mobility projects for aforementioned cities. The participants were also informed about different options for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service in Abbottabad on the model of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project of Peshawar.

The chief minister on this occasion, has directed the KPUMA’s authorities to prepare a master plan for traffic management in Abbottabad adding that the initial concept of the plan should be finalized keeping in view the ground realities, objective conditions and prevailing vehicular traffic problems in the city.

“A realistic and viable traffic plan should be prepared in consultation with all the stakeholders”, he said and directed to have a joint meeting of all the relevant departments and authorities to be presided over by commissioner Hazara Division, for this purpose.

He said that the traffic issue in the city is getting worse with each passing day and needs to be addressed once and for all. “We need to have a comprehensive plan keeping in view the future requirements of the city as well as requisites of urban mobility,” the chief minister remarked and added that all the stakeholders should have to play their proactive role in this regard.
