Nearly 100 dams are planned for construction: MoEW

KABUL (TOLO News): The acting Ministry of Energy and Water (MoEW), Abdul Latif Mansoor, said that for the prevention of vulnerability to drought in the country, nearly 100 water small dams have been planned to be constructed to strengthen the underground water.
Abdul Latif Mansoor said that several dams have been inaugurated and some more are being constructed. “We have contracted about 93 dams in a very short time, 5 of them were completed in Logar, 5 were in Maidan Wardak, and in Samangan province,” he added.
On the other hand, several farmers complain about the lack of water and cannot continue farming, they said.
They believe that the reduction of water and consecutive droughts has increased the unemployment rate in the country.
“Since the past three years, drought has put a lot of pressure on the people, especially in the farming of potato and wheat,” said Mohammad Sarwar, a farmer. “The land does not grow anything, in these years, people have become vulnerable and they suffered a lot” Jumma Khan, another farmer.
The acting Minister also said that with the construction of these projects, the lack of water will be addressed. Before this, the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development announced the commencement of 426 Afs worth of projects involving small dams in 13 provinces.
