HERAT: A blast occurred in Shindand district in Herat province on Tuesday, causing no casualties, officials said. Remote-controlled explosives went off in Shindand district bazaar, causing no casualties, Herat governor’s spokesman Jilani Farhad told Afghan Islamic Press. Few shops were damaged in the bombing, he added.

However, some sources said explosives in a rickshaw went off in the area. The fighters of an armed commander identified as Mullah Nangiali were on board the vehicle. Two persons were injured in the blast, the sources added.

Separately, the sources said gunfight erupted between the fighters of a Taliban commander identified as Mullah Samad and gunmen of Mullah Nangiali, commander of another Taliban faction led by Mullah Muhammad Rasool in Khefan area in Shindand district.

Four fighters of Mullah Samad were killed and four more injured in the gunfight, the sources said. Similarly, three gunmen of Mullah Nangiali were injured, the sources added. The fighters of Mullah Samad put fire to a checkpoint of the fighters of Mullah Nangiali, the sources said.

The Taliban have not said anything about these incidents so far. However, a media official of the group led by Mullah Muhammad Rasool told AIP that six fighters of Mullah Samad were killed and five more sustained injuries in the clash.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Taliban strongly reject reports about the presence of any other Taliban movement in Shindand district. They are of the view that some gunmen under the command of Afghan government are active against the Taliban in the district.
