PHC converts death penalty into lifetime imprisonment

PESHAWAR: Peshawar High Court (PHC) converted death sentence of murder into lifetime imprisonment while partially accepted appeal against the conviction.
According to prosecution, Taj Akbar along with father and brother killed her wife in the name of honor at Uthla area of Swabi district in 2018.

The culprit alleged cut nose, head and ear of the death body. Police registered case on complaint of deceased’s son.

The counsel Muhammad Arif Jan advocate argued trial court Swabi convicted petitioner for death penalty while co accused were acquitted from the allegation on 15th November 2021.

PHC has converted death sentence to lifetime imprisonment of Taj Akbar in murder case in the name of honor by partially accepting appeal plea.


PHC directs provision of clemency to prisoners: Peshawar High Court (PHC)’s divisional bench comprising of Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Sahibzada Asadullah ordered provision of clemency to prisoners named Bakhtawar Shah and Tahir Khan under Anti-Narcotics Act.

The counsel Fawad Afzal Safi advocate that both petitioners are charged and convicted under provincial narcotics laws but in 2022 amendment in Federal Law had stopped clemency in contraband cases and jail’s officials implemented it upon the inmates.

The counsel argued that stoppage of clemency would be implemented upon federal law neither in provincial case and added that petitioners are liable for relief.
PHC granted clemency to prisoners charged and convicted under provincial laws against narcotics after conclusion of arguments.
