PUL-I-KHUMRI: Some Provincial Council members and civil society activists of northern Baghlan province say the government should accelerate the distribution of electronic national identity cards (E-NICs).
Shamsul Haq Barakzai, a public representative, said: “I’m proud of my national identity and will remain an Afghan forever — a fact that should be written in my e-NIC.” Further delay in the distribution of the cards was no longer tolerable, he remarked, asking the government to accelerate the process and extend it to other provinces as well.
Another member of the provincial council, Asadullah Shahbaz, told Afghan News agency he strongly supported the distribution of e-NICs.
He urged the Presidential Palace to give a tit-for-tat response to those who created hurdle to the process. He asked the president to expose the circles creating impediments to the issuance of the e-NICs.
Ahmad Nasir Hairan, a civil society leader, said they were supportive of all lawful decision of the government. “We back the issuance of e-NICs and want the government to remove the obstacles — if any.”
Hairan added if the government could share power with a political party, the process of issuing e-NICs should have been discussed earlier.
He warned the upcoming elections would not be transparent if disputes on the e-NICs distribution were not resolved with a sense of urgency.
Public representatives and civil society activists seek accelerated distribution of e-NICs at a time when the so-called invisible roadblocks to the process are yet to be cleared.
According to an Afghan media survey, majority of Afghans support the early distribution of e-NICs across the country.
